St. Mary Axe 30 – The Gherkin

We designed the interior horizontal sliding shutters for the restaurant atop St. Mary Axe 30 (also known as The Gherkin) in close collaboration with the architects Foster + Partners.   The manually operated sliding shutters are covered with textile and curves along the lines of the gherkin-shaped building. The system is built on 12 trapeze-shaped panels mounted on aluminum rails and placed on the interior of the façade.   The sliding shutters effectively control the daylight intake in the restaurant, and the guests can enjoy the stunning view even when they are in use. When the sliding shutters are not used, they can be removed entirely and parked in a designated storage area....

Royal Festival Hall

When Allies and Morrison led the restoration of London's Royal Festival Hall, we helped design and produce the acoustic doors in front of the central organ.   The acoustic doors consist of 8 6,5-meter tall, 500-kilo heavy motorized horizontal sliding shutters that allow for control of the concert hall's acoustics. Furthermore, the acoustic doors have three settings; the organ can be visible, partly covered or completely hidden....

Mærsk Tårnet

We assisted C.F. Møller Architects with developing a range of different dynamic solar screening concepts for Mærsk Tårnet, a 17 story high-rise in the middle of Copenhagen.   Full-scale mockups of the different concepts were built, so the contractors, architects and engineering consultants could compare them to each other based on aesthetics, materials, functionality, outlook, transparency, environmental issues, energy, comfort, safety, durability, operational stability and cost.   The final concept, motorized exterior horizontal sliding shutters, was then developed into a fully functional mockup. The mockup was tested in the most advanced climate test center in Europe....

FIH Domicile

We designed and developed the exterior sliding shutters for the FIH Domicile (now PensionDanmark) in collaboration with 3XN Architects.   The FIH Domicile is located at the point of Langelinie Quay and has achieved recognition among architects because the characteristic sliding shutters constantly vary the architectural expression of the building – and because they are the only sliding shutters in the world, where the same electric motor drives both the frames and the tilting slats.
