We designed the interior horizontal sliding shutters for the restaurant atop St. Mary Axe 30 (also known as The Gherkin) in close collaboration with the architects Foster + Partners.
The manually operated sliding shutters are covered with textile and curves along the lines of the gherkin-shaped building. The system is built on 12 trapeze-shaped panels mounted on aluminum rails and placed on the interior of the façade.
The sliding shutters effectively control the daylight intake in the restaurant, and the guests can enjoy the stunning view even when they are in use. When the sliding shutters are not used, they can be removed entirely and parked in a designated storage area.
